On September 17, 1991, Mena Massoud was born in Cairo, Egypt, He is the son of Gorgit and Mansour Massoud. Massoud has two older sisters, Marian and Margaret, both of whom work in the medical field.
When Massoud was just three years old, his family decided to emigrate to Canada, settling in Toronto. The decision to leave Egypt was driven by concerns about safety, as Massoud explained, "I was born there. We immigrated when I was 3 1/2 years old, to Toronto. But I'm still very, very close to my culture and - back home in Egypt."
Mena continued "We're Coptic Christians and my parents just felt like things were getting a little too dangerous when I was growing up in Egypt. They wanted to create a better life for their family so they decided to emigrate to Canada."
Growing up, Massoud lived in Markham, Ontario, and attended St. Brother André Catholic High School, where he was actively involved in the improv team. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Toronto, initially pursuing a degree in neuroscience with aspirations of becoming a doctor or psychologist.
However, Mena later decided to shift gears and pursue his passion for acting. He transferred to Ryerson University to study in their theatre performance program, from which he graduated in 2014.
