When the roof collapsed on two of his colleagues, Vita and his team acted fast, rescuing them and saving their lives. About 15 years later, he faced another situation that got a lot of attention.

Mike and two neighbors, including another firefighter, thought a 22-year-old named Samuel was giving out candy laced with drugs to kids on Halloween. They chased Samuel and caught him. Mike and one of his neighbors held Samuel down while the other neighbor choked him until he passed out.

Samuel had to stay in the hospital for many weeks, and Vita and his friends performed CPR on him until help arrived. Later, Mike and his friends were charged with serious assault crimes.

Mike pleaded not guilty to a lesser charge and was suspended from work for six months, although the Chang family wanted stronger punishment. Eventually, Vita returned to his job as a firefighter.
