Dan Fogelberg Career Highlights

WZZQ, a radio station in Jackson, Mississippi, played a significant role in boosting Home Free's visibility. Local promoters secured the City Auditorium in Jackson for a concert, which surprisingly sold out in just ten days. Dan Fogelberg's agent was initially skeptical, as Fogelberg had been accustomed to playing in clubs with fewer than 100 attendees, while the City Auditorium had a seating capacity of 2,500.

This remarkable show, held on February 22, 1974, was broadcast and recorded by WZZQ, and the recording can be found on YouTube. Dan's second album, the 1974 Joe Walsh-produced "Souvenirs," marked a turning point in his career.

The song "Part of the Plan" from this album became Fogelberg's first hit, and contributions from the Eagles further enriched the album. Following this success, Dan released a series of gold and platinum albums, including "Captured Angel" (1975) and "Nether Lands" (1977).

In 1978, Dan collaborated with jazz flutist Tim Weisberg on "Twin Sons of Different Mothers," spawning commercial successes like "The Power of Gold." The album peaked at number 42 on the UK Albums Chart, and "The Power of Gold" reached number 59 on the UK Singles Chart.

The 1979 album "Phoenix" reached the top 10, featuring the #2 pop hit "Longer" in 1980, followed by another Top 20 hit, "Heart Hotels." In 1980, Fogelberg contributed to the soundtrack of the film "Urban Cowboy" with the song "Times Like These" and made his debut on a live television program.

"The Innocent Age," released in October 1981, marked Dan's critical and commercial peak. This double album included major hits like "Same Old Lang Syne," "Hard to Say," "Leader of the Band," and "Run for the Roses." Inspired by Thomas Wolfe's novel "Of Time and the River," it became one of his most celebrated works.

Despite his popularity, Fogelberg faced challenges, including stage fright, according to MTV. However, Fogelberg refuted this claim, attributing his cancellations to recurrent streptococcal tonsillitis. He underwent a tonsillectomy, which significantly improved his health.

San continued his musical journey with albums like "High Country Snows" in 1985, showcasing bluegrass talent, and a venture into blues with "Frankie and the Aliens" in late 1985. In 1987, he returned to rock with "Exiles," followed by "The Wild Places" in 1990, focusing on the theme of nature preservation.

"River of Souls," released in 1993, marked Dan's last studio album for Sony Records. In 1997, the box set "Portrait" encapsulated his career with four discs, each highlighting a different facet of his music. Further releases included a Christmas album in 1999, "The First Christmas Morning," and the 2003 album "Full Circle," which revisited the folk-influenced soft rock style of the 1970s.

A live album of Fogelberg's 1979 performance at Carnegie Hall was released in May 2017. It became the first of his live albums to chart on the Billboard Top 200 chart, peaking at No. 71 on June 10, 2017.
