Wyatt Cenac was born on April 19, 1976, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, New York. His early years were spent in the Bronx. His father, Wyatt Cenac Sr., originally from Grenada, worked as a cab driver. Tragically, when Cenac was just five years old, his father was shot and killed in Harlem by a teenage passenger while driving his cab. Following this heartbreaking incident, Cenac, along with his mother and stepfather, relocated to Dallas, Texas, in 1981.

During his time in elementary school, Cenac developed a friendship with comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan, who introduced him to the world of comic books. Cenac attended and graduated from the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. Subsequently, he pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he ventured into stand-up comedy with his first sets.
