Givens' big breakthrough came with her role as Darlene Merriman in the ABC sitcom Head of the Class, which lasted for five seasons until 1991. During this time, she also starred in The Women of Brewster Place with Oprah Winfrey and later appeared in films like A Rage in Harlem and Boomerang.

Marinkovic himself mentioned, "the marriage lasted seven minutes," shortly after their separation. Robin filed for divorce from her tennis instructor husband in December 1997, and it took about ten months for the proceedings to finalize, concluding in September 1998.
