Phil Donahue

Phil Donahue is an American journalist, writer, and television personality who helped establish the midday issue-oriented talk show format. Donahue earned nine Daytime Emmy Awards as outstanding host (1977–80, 1982–83, 1985–86, and 1988) for his enormously popular show, which aired from 1967 until 1996.

After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1957, he moved into broadcasting. Ten years later, he began hosting The Phil Donahue Show, which set a new standard for daytime talk shows with its audience engagement and investigation of contentious themes. He earned multiple Emmy Awards, but after years of dwindling ratings, he retired in 1996. In 2002, he returned to MSNBC with a short-lived show and directed the documentary Body of War in 2007.

Donahue's full name is Phillip John Donahue; born on December 21, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S., into a middle-class Irish Catholic family. His father, Phillip Donahue, was a furniture salesman, while his mother, Catherine nee McClory, was a shoe clerk at a departmental store. He did not get enough love from both parents; the relationship lasted for only a short period as they divorced when he was still a child.

He started his career as a production assistant at the KYW radio and television station in Cleveland in 1957. However, he was quickly promoted to announcer after the regular announcer failed to show up one day, and he successfully stepped in for him.

He began hosting the morning news in 1963; later in the same year, he began hosting Conversation Piece, a WHIO radio phone-in afternoon chat show. He began hosting a business TV chat program and co-anchoring the evening news soon after. In 1967, he left WHIO to work as a traveling salesperson for the E. F. MacDonald Company, selling stamps; however, he returned to broadcasting the following year.
