Monica Samille Lewinsky’s Presidential Scandal

Between November 1995 and March 1997, Monica Lewinsky acknowledged having nine affair encounters with President Bill Clinton, though she specified that these encounters did not involve intercourse. In April 1996, Lewinsky was transferred to the Pentagon due to concerns from her superiors about her proximity to the president. She confided in her co-worker Linda Tripp about her relationship with Clinton, and in September 1997, Tripp began secretly recording their phone conversations.

Remaining at the Pentagon until December 1997, Lewinsky, the following month, submitted an affidavit in the Paula Jones case, denying any relationship with Clinton. She attempted to persuade Tripp to lie under oath, but instead, Tripp handed over the recorded tapes to Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel investigating the Clintons' Whitewater real estate investments.

Tripp advised Lewinsky not to dry clean a blue dress that held evidence of an affair encounter with Clinton and instructed her to preserve any gifts he had given her. Initially, Clinton denied any relations with Lewinsky under oath and in a January 1998 press conference. However, after Starr obtained the blue dress, Clinton admitted to having "a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate." Lewinsky and Clinton testified before a grand jury, with the Office of the Independent Counsel granting Monica transactional immunity.
