One person who kept asking him about it was Valerie Jarrett. She shared advice from Barack Obama, who would ask young men in committed relationships, "Do you love her? Do you know for a fact that she wants to marry you?" If both answers were yes, Obama would advise them to get married. 

Finally, on May 16, 2016, during their trip to Positano, Italy, Jonathan proposed to Nick. The engagement had been planned for months, and Jonathan even sought Nick's mother, Jan's blessing before proposing.

Nick Schmit and Jonathan Capehart got married on January 7, 2017. They had planned to marry in the fall at the Meridian House but changed plans after the 2016 election.

They decided to wed while an administration supportive of LGBTQ+ rights was still in office. Their wedding took place at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington, and Eric H. Holder, the former U.S. Attorney General, officiated. 

Family and friends, including Nick's mom Jan Schmit, and Jonathan's mom Margaret Capehart, attended. Notable guests included Darrek Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall, and advisor Valerie Jarrett.
