Meet Marilou Covey: A Glimpse into the World of Susur Lee's Remarkable Wife

Marilou Covey was a Canadian teacher, writer, and helper. She was best recognized for being married to Susur Lee, a well-known chef. 

Sadly, in 1983, Covey passed away in a terrible accident when a Soviet jet fighter shot down Korean Air Flight 007 over the Soviet Union.

Susur Lee Career Journey

Starting from the bottom, Lee climbed to become an executive chef at various restaurants and eventually became an entrepreneur. He is known for his unique cooking style called fusion cuisine. One of his famous dishes is "Singapore Slaw," his twist on a traditional Lo Hei salad eaten during the Lunar New Year.  

Susur made his mark in TV competitions like Bravo's Top Chef: Masters, finishing second. Lee has also appeared on many cooking shows and was one of Canada's chefs on the Food Network's Iron Chef America.

Throughout his career, Lee has been a chef at various Toronto spots, judged culinary contests, appeared on food and wine TV shows, and managed restaurants in Canada, the United States, and Singapore. His first restaurant, Lotus, opened in Toronto in 1987, and he oversees the Susur Lee Restaurant Group.

Marilou Covey and Susur Lee's Love Story  

Marilou Covey taught English at different schools in Hong Kong, where she met Susur Lee back in 1976. They fell for each other and got married in 1978. 

Lee was a chef at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. He had moved to Canada from Hong Kong in 1978 with Covey, who sadly passed away soon after their arrival.

Marilou kept teaching English in Hong Kong until 1983 when she decided to move to Canada with Susur. They purchased a house in Toronto and planned to open their restaurant there. 

How Did Marilou Covey Pass Away?  

Marilou Covey tragically passed away on September 1, 1983, at the age of 34. She was a passenger on Korean Air Lines Flight 007, which was tragically shot down by a Soviet jet fighter over the Sea of Japan.  

The flight was en route from Seoul to New York City and accidentally entered Soviet airspace. Sadly, all 269 individuals on board, including passengers and crew, lost their lives in this devastating incident.  

This devastating loss deeply affected Susur Lee, Covey's husband, who decided to honor Marilou's memory by establishing restaurants worldwide that echoed her passion for food and culture. Additionally, he became an advocate for peace and human rights as part of his tribute to her memory. 

Susur Lee's Second Marriage  

In 1991, Susur Lee found love again with Brenda Bent, whom he met while working as a chef at Peter Pan restaurant. Lee, having been widowed, was seeking love once more. Their first meeting wasn't particularly romantic but after a while, they started dating. 

Their decision to marry came when Bent was expecting their second son, Kai. Over time, they grew closer, discovering shared interests and hobbies. Brenda was excited about becoming a mother and starting a fresh chapter with Lee. 

Lee felt fortunate to have found someone who truly understood and supported him. Together, they had three sons: Kai Lee, Levi Lee, and Jet Bent Lee.
