Madilyn Mei: The Whimsical Indie Dreamer

Madilyn Mei was born in November of 2002 and spent her childhood growing up in Queen Creek, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix. She developed an early passion for writing that started as a passion for poetry before branching out into songwriting when she got her first ukulele during fourth grade. She taught herself the fundamentals of songwriting based on influences like Taylor Swift. By the fifth grade, she was performing original compositions in public, solidifying her passion for music. 

Mei attended Heritage Academy Gateway to high school. During these early days, she began playing local gigs and growing her presence on Instagram starting in 2016, gaining a following online as well as learning to do her work by playing in well-known Nashville venues such as the Bluebird Cafe and The Listening Room. 

Music Career Beginnings and Online Success (2020–2022) 

Madilyn Mei began her initial demo works released early and gathered momentum in the indie folk scene with her 2022 EP Where No One Knows My Name. During this period, she accumulated a huge following through exploiting the social media platforms TikTok and YouTube, whose idyllic, fantasy-flavored songs met great favor with audiences. 

She also performed as a headliner at top music events such as the ZONA Music Festival in Phoenix. Her songwriting and performing style, characterized by emotionally intelligent lyrics and cozy, otherworldly vocals, started to be recognized beyond her hometown scene.

Mei's concept EP, The Bard, released in 2024, was celebrated for its rich fantasy storytelling and theatrical live performances across the interactive Side Quest Tour. Her gorgeous vocals and contemplative lyricism were welcomed by critics.

Madilyn Mei remained active in 2025, releasing singles like "Poppin Skittles" and "What's Going On?!" that remained her eclectic indie-pop and indie-folk blend. She was guested on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert during a segment highlighting up-and-coming music artists. 

Mei was also on tour with the group AJR for a series of dates during their Somewhere in the Sky U.S. tour. Her album A Thousand Songs About It All: Act 1 was released in September 2025, reflecting her ongoing evolution as a songwriter and performer, while maintaining her signature whimsical style with heartfelt storytelling.
