Kristen Welker

Kristen Welker is an NBC news correspondent and television journalist in the United States. She is best recognized as a Washington, D.C.-based White House Correspondent. Her stories may be found on "NBC Nightly News," "Today," "Meet the Press," MSNBC, and NBCNews.com, among other NBC News platforms. She has traveled extensively with Barak Obama,  Michelle Obama, and Joe Biden both domestically and overseas, including substantial coverage on the campaign trail during the 2012 election.

The reporter received a nomination for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award in 2008. She is now the co-anchor of NBC's daily morning news and conversation show "Weekend Today," as well as the Saturday version of "Today," with Peter Alexander, whom she describes as a beloved brother and closest friend. She was complimented for her work as a moderator, particularly for how she handled the two presidential contenders' time slots.

Early Life 

Welker was born on July 1, 1976, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the United States of America. While she is well-known at White House press briefings for her lively questioning and hard-hitting political reporting, few people are aware of her personal life.

Her private life had never been publicized until she hit 40, despite the fact that she was an amazing presenter and journalist. She stated that she had always wanted to work as a journalist. Her ambition has come true, and she enjoys her work.

Family

Harvey Welker and Julie Welker are her parents' names. Her mother is a real estate agent, while her father is an engineer. Julie is well-known, having previously run for the 5th City Council District in Philadelphia in 1995.

Welker, too, is of African-American descent, with white ancestors on her father's side and black ancestors on her mother's.

Education

This hardworking woman graduated from Philadelphia's Germantown Friends School in 1994. She is a native of Philadelphia and earned a bachelor's degree in American history from Harvard University in 1998.

 The ABC News reporter belongs to the National Association of Black Women and has also received a Rotary Scholarship to study Spanish in Madrid.  

Relationship

John Hughes, a marketing director for Merck in Philadelphia, is married to the outstanding and Emmy-nominated reporter Kristen Welker. Mutual friends brought the pair together for the first time. Following that, the couple continued to date and were engaged in June 2016. At the Lincoln Memorial, Josh dropped down on his knees and proposed. Later, on March 4, 2017, the pair married. Their wedding, on the other hand, was a grandiose celebration of their love. Welker's hometown, the Hyatt at Bellevue, hosted their wedding. She was clothed in a classic white lace gown and wore her hair in a basic updo, but her grin was all she needed on that particular day. John on the other hand was dressed in a black tuxedo at the same time. As they exchanged vows beneath the white petals, the scene seemed perfect.

Over 300 individuals attended the huge wedding, including their friends and loved ones. Kelly O'Donnell, Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, David Cohen, and others were among the attendees at the wedding. The adorable pair is currently enjoying a happy married life. Later that year, the reporter released a photo of herself and her spouse, as well as their official marriage license from Philadelphia City Hall.

Children

The journalist did, however, reveal her challenges with infertility and other concerns in a recent interview in September 2021. Those were the most terrifying times of her life and said that she was having trouble coping with them. 

Despite this, they did not lose hope, and their first child, Margot Lane Welker Hughes, was born to them via surrogacy in June 2021. Holding her daughter's little hand was a "gift," she said.

Career as a Journalist

Welker works for NBC News, where she is the network's co-chief White House correspondent and co-anchor of Weekend Today, Today's Saturday edition, alongside Peter Alexander. She also moderated the second presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, which took place on October 22, 2020. She formerly worked for WLNE-TV in Providence, RI, and KRCR-TV in Redding, CA, both ABC affiliates. She began her career as a reporter and weekend anchor at NBC's Philadelphia owned-and-operated station, WCAU, in 2005.  

In 2010, she joined NBC News as a reporter located in Burbank, California, at the NBC News West Coast Headquarters. She was recruited as an NBC White House reporter in December 2011. She attends regular White House press briefings on behalf of MSNBC and reports live for various MSNBC shows. She is a frequent guest on NBC Nightly News and Today.

Welker will join Peter Alexander as a regular co-anchor of Weekend Today on January 10, 2020, according to NBC. On January 11, 2020, she made her debut as a Weekend Today co-anchor. She will be honored with the Outstanding Journalist in Broadcast Television award at the Washington Women in Journalism Awards in September 2020.

Kristen spoke to The Every Girl about her work and offered advice to any women who aspire to be journalists: For young women interested in pursuing a career in journalism, her advice is to be prepared and confident. She wrote for her high school and college newspapers, and while she was a junior in college, she landed her first internship with "TODAY."

Every day, she comes to the White House with the same degree of preparation: she arrives early, reads as much as she can, and phones various sources. It's also critical to have self-assurance. Journalism is a difficult field, but with hard effort and determination, you can overcome any obstacle she told her well-wishers.

Kristen was honored with the Outstanding Journalist in the Broadcast Television category at the Washington Women in Journalism Awards in 2020.

In 2015, she received an Emmy for Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story - Long Form. She has also gained attention on multiple occasions and is frequently seen as a role model for young women. She made it to the list of the most well-known journalists and was also included in the elite list of well-known Americans born in the United States.
