Jon Heder was born in 1977 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Heder is the son of Helen and James. He has five siblings: a twin brother named Dan, an older brother named Doug, an older sister named Rachel, and younger brothers named Adam and Matt

When Heder was about two years old, his family moved to Salem, Oregon. He went to Walker Middle School and later to South Salem High School. At South Salem High, he joined the drama club, swam for the school team, and became an Eagle Scout. 

After finishing high school, Jon went to Brigham Young University and graduated in 2002. It was at BYU where he became friends with Jared Hess and acted in Hess's short film called "Peluca."

Heder also did voice work for animated movies such as "Surf's Up" and "Monster House," as well as TV shows like "Pickle and Peanut." Despite scaling back from Hollywood around 2018, he still performs occasionally. 

Jon was paid just $1,000 for his role in "Napoleon Dynamite." That seemed like a small amount compared to the movie's massive $44.5 million box office success.

Later that year, on October 8, Heder hosted Saturday Night Live alongside musical guest Ashlee Simpson. Jon and his co-star Efren Ramirez worked on commercials promoting the 2015 Utah State Fair and did a funny sketch called "Napoleon Bonamite" on the animated show Robot Chicken.  

Moving forward, in 2005, Jon had a supporting role as a clerk in the romantic comedy "Just Like Heaven." The following year, in 2006, he appeared in the comedy film "The Sasquatch Gang" and starred alongside Rob Schneider and David Spade in "The Benchwarmers," a comedy about three men creating their own Little League baseball team to make up for missed opportunities.

Also in 2006, Heder voiced the character Skull in the animated film "Monster House" and starred in the comedy "School for Scoundrels" alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Jacinda Barrett.  

Jon's collaboration continued in 2007 when he co-starred with Will Ferrell in the acclaimed "Blades of Glory," portraying an absurd figure skater who teams up with a rival for a pairs competition, much like in many of his comedic roles.

Heder delved into voice acting again in 2007, giving life to Chicken Joe, a surfing chicken, in the animated movie "Surf's Up." His initial venture into web TV happened with the 2008 web series "Woke Up Dead," which he not only produced but also starred in. The series is a live-action, sci-fi comedy thriller that follows Drex, a USC student who wakes up underwater in a bathtub one morning and thinks he might be dead.  

Jon teamed up with his twin brother, Dan, to play villains in the fourth chapter of the popular online martial arts comedy series, "Sockbaby." Heder received praise for his role in "When in Rome" as a quirky street magician, described as the funniest among the characters by New York Times critic A. O. Scott.  

In 2012, Heder returned to the role that brought him fame, lending his voice to Napoleon Dynamite in the animated series aired on Fox Network. He appeared in music videos as well, like "On Top of the World" in 2013 with several Utah-based actors and musicians, and in 2014, he featured in the music video for the Chromeo song "Old 45s."  

Continuing his work in the animated world, in January 2017, Jon revisited his role as Chicken Joe in "Surf's Up 2: WaveMania," the sequel released directly to video after the success of the first film. Looking ahead, in 2022, it was announced that Heder would star in the comedy film "Plan B," alongside Tom Berenger and Shannon Elizabeth.
